The Akyem Tafo Traditional Council in the Eastern Region has imposed a ban on drumming and noise-making as part of customs to usher in Ohum-Kan festival.
The two weeks ban which took effect on Tuesday, June 23, 2020, will end July 7, 2020.It must be observed from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm every day.
Residents and all other organizations and companies are expected to respect tradition and obey accordingly. Persons who flout the ban will be fined by the traditional council.
Akyem Tafohene Osaberima Adusei Peasah IV says this year’s celebration will not be packed with many activities as characterized by the annual festival due to the Covid-19 pandemic and restrictions on Public gathering.
Ohum-Kan Festival is celebrated by the Akyems -Akyem Tafo, Kyebi, and Asamankese in the Eastern Region.
It signifies the breaking of hunger by their god (agyimpremo) showing a rope of Yam.
The celebration marks the first yam harvest of the year and to ask for blessings for the coming year
It is always accompanied by Ohum-Kyire which closes the Yam festival and is done in remembrance of the ancestors. It takes place between July and September each year.
