The West Akyem Municipal Director for the National Commission for Civic Education in the Eastern Region, Madam Modesta Sapaty has stressed the need for all eligible voters to participate in the Voter registration exercise to deepen Democracy.
According to her, the principle of popular sovereignty, which means the people are the source of all power, is the very essence of a democracy and the government gets all its power from their people.
Speaking on the need for all Ghanaians of voting age to Register and Vote, Madam Modesta Sapaty said People can change or re-elect the President and Member of Parliament through elections and the Government always tries to demonstrate its respect for the principle of sovereignty of the people.
She said Democracy is a government of the people and one of its principal features is that it ensures free and equal political participation for all and For this purpose uniform equal franchise, that is Universal Adult Franchise is granted to the people while the value of vote of each individual is equal to the value of vote of everyone else.
The NCCE director noted that anyone can compete in the political struggle and after successfully competing in elections, can hold a public office only if the person is a registered voter and participate in all elections.
Madam Sapaty however urged Ghanaians to avoid violence and intimidation if they are not happy with any elected leader and those seeking to be elected and exercise patience until December general election and vote for their choice.
