The COVID -19 pandemic has put a lot of activities on hold and the well-known France award Ballon d’Or is not an exception.
Football has been greatly affected by the pandemic because some matches were put on hold and other games were played in and will be played in unordinary conditions like behind closed doors. In view of that, France football have confirmed that there would be no Ballon d’Or this year.
The award that has mostly been won by Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi won’t take place, therefore, no footballer will win that award this year.
This is the first time in history since 1956 that this award will not be handed out to any player, last year Lionel Messi picked up his sixth award, meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo has won the prestigious award five times.
The cancellation is due to the imbalance that the coronavirus pandemic has caused, editor-in-chief Pascal Ferre voiced out that “this cannot – and should not – be treated as an ordinary one”. That means the virus should not be taken for granted.
“For the first time since 1956, the Ballon d’Or will take a break. There will be no edition in 2020, because it turns out, after thoughtful consideration, that all the conditions are not met. We believe that such a singular year cannot -and should not- be treated as an ordinary one”.
However, in 2021 the football family will reunite because the Ballon d’Or will come on live.
“The Ballon d’Or will gather again the football big family and enthusiasts in 2021, to relive the happiness that surrounds the ceremonies as we have experienced them in recent years.” This is what he said in their release to the public.
