Sisters Keepers Association’s Executive Hajia Fauzia has declared that dementia is not witchcraft as some people perceive it to be and it’s about time people get to know the difference.
This reaction from Hajia Fauzia comes to Hajia after the cruel murder of an old woman later revealed as Akua Denteh, who was brutally murdered by some young women in Kafaba near Salaga after being accused of witchcraft.
In an interview at Dadi FM 101.1 with Abena Pokuaa Ahwenee, Hajia Fauzia disclosed that most people confuse dementia a disease that leads to an impairment of the brain which can result in memory loss and judgement of older people but unfortunately people relate this to witchcraft.
She went on to say that, Sisters Keepers Association is mainly concerned about old people therefore this topic is very important to them.
Therefore, they also joined the mass appeal for justice for the late Akua Denteh, they have already released a press statement to condemn the actions of the murderers.
“We are very particular about issues concerning old people and because of that, we are going to ensure that the murderers of the act will be brought to book. We have also travelled to the Kafaba township and to our surprise, we found out that the old woman was actually a good woman with 7 children and over 21 grandchildren and was not even showing signs of dementia.” She said.
Hajia added that, dementia could make an older person hallucinate and also experience memory loss, an old woman can cry for food when she had just eaten a few minutes ago. It is absolutely normal for old people to show signs of dementia.
She also appealed to the government to support the association so that they can organize seminars to be able to educate the public on the topic.
