Mrs. Samira Bawumia, Wife of the Vice President, has called on Government to include young people in planning activities towards making the world a better place for all.
She said they could also help mitigate the impact of the crisis in the long term by promoting social cohesion and countering hate speech, xenophobia, human rights violations, and violence.
Speaking at the International Youth Day celebration in Accra, Mrs. Samira Bawumia said it was important that the world empowered the youth in responding to the pandemic since they were a critical and valuable force in development.
Ghana celebrated the Day on the theme: “Youth Engagement in Mitigating the Impact of COVID-19; the Need for youth innovation and creativity,” with the global theme being: “Youth Engagement for Global Action.”
Ghana has a young age structure, with approximately 57% of the population under the age of 25.
In 2019, about 37.36 percent of Ghana’s total population was aged 0 to 14 years.
Unemployment and education are the most pressing problems for young Ghanaians, according to the most recent Afrobarometer survey.
Its findings released on International Youth Day show that these are the problems young Ghanaians want to be addressed by the state.
The survey asked adults of all ages to cite the most important problems they want the government to address, and, infrastructure and roads were “the most frequently cited priority mentioned by 59% of respondents followed by unemployment (39%) and education (38%).”
