The communications officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Upper West Akyem Constituency of the Eastern Region, Mr. Francis Bonsi has called on the government to reopen Schools if it has not lost the battle against the spread of Novel Pandemic COVID-19 as President Akufo-Addo claimed.
According to him, the government has asked all state agencies and others which generate revenue to continue operations and ignored Schools which does not generate any revenue to remain closed.
In an interview, Mr. Francis Bonsi said the government has saved money from Feeding grant, furniture provision, Textbooks, Free SHS, capitation grant, and others since the closure of Schools and refusing to reopen it because most schools do not give the Government any revenue.
He said provision of a free hot meal for over 584,000 final year Junior High school students and their teachers in public and private schools across the country is not enough because the government has saved millions of cedis in the Education sector since schools were temporarily closed down.
Mr. Bonsi noted that most District Assemblies are now using School parks as trading centers and the government is correcting revenue from Traders over there but refusing to use the COVID period to expand infrastructure.
The Communication officer noted that School pupils can play a key role in COVID awareness creation and education if they return to school.
He urged the government as a matter of urgency to reopen Basic Schools for Teachers to educate school pupils on COVID-19 to join the fight and was optimistic that Teachers can control them and hold them responsibly.
