Despite defeat in 2016 general elections, National Democratic Party (NDP) is expected to acclaim leader and 2016 flagbearer, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings on Friday, 4 September for December 7 presidential election.
The former first lady in 2016 placed number five out of six candidates who were in the presidential race with 16,533 votes, representing 0.16% of the total votes cast.
The National Democratic Party (NDP) was founded in October 2012 as a split from the ruling National Democratic Congress. Its first leader was former NDC politician Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, who is also the wife of former President of Ghana and NDC founder Jerry Rawlings.
The two-day Congress scheduled for Accra will be graced by former President Jerry John Rawlings, who is the aspirant’s husband and also the founder of the biggest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), of which Mrs. Rawlings was once a vice-chair.
Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, former First Lady says the formation of the National Democratic Party (NDP) was a reaction to the declining integrity in governance over the past few years.
She said rather than serve the interest of the people; politicians busied themselves acquiring wealth and damned anybody who challenged them.
She said the high level of corruption going on unchecked, could collapse the country.
Nana Agyeman Rawlings said the NDP noted that the political candor needed to superintend affairs of the state in the interest of all.
