Fifty (50) rural Communities in Afram Plains South District of the Eastern Region are to be connected to Solar Power.
According to the District Chief Executive George Ofori,” the 50 Communities have been selected in the district, especially along the Volta Lake, to benefit from new designed Solar System. Feasibility studies have also been conducted and the actual work would start soon”
Many rural Communities in Kwahu Afram Plains South District have no access to electricity affecting healthcare, education, and living conditions of the people.
But the DCE addressing the General Assembly Meeting of the District at Tease said some Communities have been selected to be connected to the national grid.
“I feel delighted to announce to the House that some Communities within the district have been selected to benefit from the Government’s National Electricity extension program. These extensions stretch from ForiFori to Dotorpong Communities; then Gallon 2 through Trebu to Gadorkope and from Gallon 2 to Samankwae Communities”.
He added, “Another extension stretches from Asenyansu, through Tomfuor to Bonkrom Communities, then Somsei, Daterkrom, and Mmradan have also been considered for same.” The DCE has said.
An estimated 1.2 million households are present without power supply despite Ghana having excess installed capacity.
The current access rate of electricity in the country is about 83 percent which the government has targeted to push it up to 90% by 2020.
Ghana aims to have at least, 10 percent of its energy sourced from renewable sources by 2020.
The Current energy mix as of 2020 is composed of 62 percent (2620 MW) thermal, 37 percent (1580 MW) of hydroelectric, and one percent (22.5 MW) of renewable.
Ensuring universal access to affordable electricity by 2030 as specified in Goal 7 of the Sustainable Development Goal means investing in clean energy sources such as solar, wind and thermal is apt to achieving this goal.
