The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) have temporarily suspended its strike action after it was properly served with Court Injunction secured by the National Labour Commission on Friday against the strike action.
Addressing the media Wednesday, the President of GRNMA Perpetual Ofori Ampofo, therefore, urged members to resume work from Thursday, September 24, 2020, pending further action after returning to the negotiation table.
“We are extremely grateful to every one of you for standing up to the occasion. Your absence has grounded the health system and if you did not value yourself as a nurse or midwife, this should change your perception forever. For the Employer, who had intentionally forgotten our value has felt heavily the impact of our absence and must begin to pick up the pieces of such long-standing neglect by placing value and importance on the unique services we provide.” – Perpetual Ofori Ampofo, GRNMA President said.
Nurses and midwives across the country commenced nationwide strike action on Monday, September 21, 2020, over poor conditions of service.
The Eastern Regional Hospital which is a referral hospital in the Eastern Region has almost half of it’s over 900 staff being Nurses and midwives abandoned posts affecting quality healthcare delivery.
The Regional Hospital records 927 average daily OPD attendance and 60 admissions.
The strike forced Doctors in the hospital to assume multiple tasks day and night in their quest to save lives.
The Doctors say they are overstretched calling on the government to address the concerns of the Striking Nurses and Midwives as soon as possible to avert crises in healthcare.
Management of Eastern Regional Hospital scheduled to convene an emergency meeting over the ongoing strike action by Nurses and Midwives across the country.
The meeting expected to take place today Wednesday, September 23, 2020, was called at the behest of the Medical Director of the Hospital Dr. Akoto Ampaw.
Invited to the emergency meeting are Ward In- Charge and Nurse Unit Head in Charges, Head of Anesthesia, and Physician Assistants on the strike.
