Ghana is joining the global community to commemorate the 14th edition of the World Rabies Day today, Monday, 28th September 2020.
The Country is set to eliminate Rabies by 2030 which is one of the six zoonotic, neglected tropical diseases.
The theme for World Rabies Day 2020 is “End Rabies: Collaborate, Vaccinate”– you can help by keeping pets up to date on their rabies vaccination and collaborating with doctors, veterinarians, educators, community workers, policymakers, and others in your community to raise awareness.
The Country has drafted the National Rabies Strategy with support from the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) to achieve a free rabies status, rolled out through the Ghana Rabies and Prevention Action Plan (2018-2030) to end epidemics of neglected tropical diseases by 2030.
The main obstacle is the shortage of animal vaccines. In some areas, cultural beliefs have prevented the vaccination of dogs. Furthermore, human vaccines and immunoglobulins (for post-exposure prophylaxis) are not readily available.
