A group calling itself concerned citizens association of Sefwi Asawinso ‘A’ is calling on the government to urgently stop illegal mining activities in the community.
“Asawinso electoral Area is endowed with natural resources, which have rich forest reserve with a deposit of Gold. The forest reserve is a go area for illegal chainsaw operation, illegal farming activities, illegal hunting, and illegal mining for the past years but we have seen that some individuals in power are aiding and abetting illegal mining in the forest”
The communication director of the concerned citizens association of Sefwi Asawinso ‘A’, Mr. Frank Nelson Ackah, who doubles as assembly Member told Bryt FM and Lord FM reporter, Kwame Kuntor Boateng, that “for about a month and a half ago, the community is witnessing massive illegal mining activities in the Anhwianso East forest reserve with not less than ten(10) excavators working in the forest reserve.”
Mr. Frank Nelson Ackah said,” the community is much aware that regional Security Council arrested Chinese mining illegally in the forest about a month ago but nothing has been done about it”.
He added “We are registering our displeasure about the way and the manner our forest is been destroyed by the illegal miners especially the Chinese. It is alleged that some prominent personalities are masterminding the illegalities in the forest and again, alleged that some chiefs, some opinion leaders, some national security officials are also behind this illegal mining in the forest reserve”, and with by this release giving a one-week ultimatum to the forestry commission, the mineral commission, and the gov’t to get all the excavators out of the forest defiant of which will lead to a demonstration for the whole country to see.”
Some of the youth in the community threatened to take the laws into their hands and rise against the illegal miners in the forest should government fail to flash them out.
