A group calling itself Concerned Youth of the New Patriotic Party in Akwatia Constituency of the Eastern Region has said the Party lost the seat in the area because the Parliamentary Candidate was imposed on them and he was not popular and the Voters choice.
According to the group, Some NPP leaders manipulated the internal election to choose Mr. Ernest Yaw Kumi but the PC failed to bring unity after his election.
The Akwatia seat was won by Mercy Adu Gyamfi popularly known as Amasey in 2016 with about six thousand vote’s difference to defeat NDC’s Ahmed Mohammed Baba Jamal but lost the seat in the 2020 election with Ernest Yaw Kumi as the Candidate who was defeated by NDC’s Henry Boakye Yiadom with 18,742 and 19,899 votes respectively.
Addressing the media, chairman of the Concerned Youth of the New Patriotic Party in Akwatia Constituency, Mr. Yaw Addo refuted claims that Amasey was paying money for people to vote for the NDC candidate and fingered the National Women Organizer, Kate Gyamfuah, Regional Chairman, Akomeng Kissi, Constituency Chairman, Baba Yankoro and the DCE for the Denkyembour District, Mr. Seth Birikorang as the cause of defeat and low turnout in the voting.
Mr. Yaw Addo said these Party Leaders failed to apologize to Amasey after she attempted to contest the seat as an Independent candidate and failed to unite supporters of the outgoing Member of Parliament.
The Concerned NPP Youth accused the defeated Candidate, Mr. Ernest Kumi of selecting divisive campaign team members who were following him to make a profit instead of the Party interest and said some of the young men in the campaign were also in favor to seek Positions in the Constituency.
According to the Concerned Youth, the Constituency Chairman, Baba Yankoro received a V8 Toyota Land cruiser from National Women Organizer; one week after Amasey was defeated in the internal election.
The group also accused Mr. Seth Ofosu Birikorang, DCE for the area of not exercising any form of Neutrality and Refused to pay the common fund on time to the MP for her projects.
