Parliamentary of Ghana says even though it regrets various incidents that occurred in the chamber during the election of the speaker of Parliament, it has no intention to investigate same for the sake of unity.
A statement issued by Kate Addo, Director of Public Affairs of Parliament Friday said, Parliament will put the incidents behind it and forge ahead in unity.
The statement also denied video in circulation on social media claiming the marshal in Parliament attempted to stuff the ballot during the voting which led to another chaos.
According to the Public Affairs Directorate of Parliament, the Marshall was only positioning her teaser to provide security to the ballot box.
Alban Kingsford Bagbin of the opposition NDC was elected Speaker of Parliament in a chaotic election in the chamber of Parliament Thursday dawn which led to intrusion by armed military and Police who later retreated.
Bagbin beat the incumbent Speaker Prof. Mike Oquaye by 138 as against 136. Votes polled.
Calls for investigation into the chaos continue to increase by many concerned Ghanaians.
A former President and 2020 Presidential Candidate of the largest opposition party -NDC, John Dramani Mahama has also called for an investigation into the military invasion of Parliament last night during the election of the speaker of Parliament, for sanctions to be meted out to persons found culpable.
“The recent use of the military in civil democratic processes has become a major worry and gives the impression that this administration is continually seeking to resurrect the exorcised ghosts of our military past. Parliament must investigate the two incidents and exact appropriate sanctions” Mr. Mahama said in a congratulatory statement issued Thursday morning to Rt. Hon. Alban Sumani Kingsford Bagbin on his election as the Speaker of the 8th Parliament of the 4th Republic.
But Parliament seems not to be interested in any investigation whatsoever as captured in a statement issued and attached to the article.
