Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, Director General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), has called on Ghanaians to encourage virtual meetings and working from home and Minimize indoor dining activities where possible to curb the spread of the Pandemic COVID-19.
He added that Workplace protocols must be respected.
Addressing the media in Accra Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, said the number of new infections remains high but has stagnated and no further increases being observed in the last week
“The total number of active positives we have ever recorded is about 63,883. We have tested about 757,000 plus people with a cumulative positivity of 8.4 percent and our current active cases are roughly about 3,940. We have recorded 390 deaths so far, and you can see that there has rapid escalation in the last few weeks on the number of deaths.”
“Active cases continue to rise due to the sudden surge in the last few days. The cases from Greater Accra Region are mainly located in Accra metropolitan area and its adjoining districts. “Many of the cases are still among the middle and upper-middle class and are among families and close friends. There are an increasing number of workplace outbreaks,” he said.
Dr. John Amuasi, a Senior Research Fellow, Global Health and Infectious Diseases Research Group, believes a new variant of the coronavirus is responsible for the recent surge in cases and increased deaths.
He has urged the government to set routine surveillance sites across the country to better assess the situation.
