The Executive Director of the African Centre for Parliamentary Affairs (ACEPA), Dr Rashid Draman has urged the leadership of Parliament to suspend physical sittings following the detection of 71 COVID-19 infections.
According to him, it is possible to conduct the business of the house from their own individual space.
Dr Rashid Draman affirmed that the Parliament could protect MPs by avoiding physical meetings.
He added that working remotely is the way forward.
“I think Parliament should go beyond the reduction of sittings and employ the benefits of technology we have today,’’ Dr Rashid Draman told Citi News.
But ACEPA has already called for the closure of the house adding that it would be dangerous for MPs to physically attend sittings.
Meanwhile, fifteen Members of Parliament have tested positive for COVID-19 after a recent round of testing and 56 staff of the parliamentary service have also tested positive for the virus.
