Presiding member for Akwapim North Municipal Assembly and Former independent candidate, Hon Ofei Asiedu has insisted that the debate over the admission of two students with dreadlocks to Achimota Senior High School (SHS) should trim their dreadlocks to be admitted.
Hon. Ofei Asiedu was speaking to Bryt FM news in reaction to a decision by the Achimota SHS to admit two Rastafarian first-year students on campus unless they cut their hair.
According to him, Achimota School did not refuse to admit the students, adding that the school only spelled out the rules and regulations of the school to the parent and the student.
“I expect that if they want to be in that school, they should obey the rules and regulations. The rules and regulations of an institution are not chosen and picked by individuals, they become standard and ought to be obeyed by anyone who wants to access the school” he added.
Hon. Ofei Asiedu further supported the school’s insistence that the two students cut their dreadlocks before being enrolled.
He added that allowing them to be enrolled based on religion would open the flood gates for “other people to also come in demanding compromises for their religious beliefs.”
“If you make a compromise for religious reasons, you are likely to have other people also come in demanding compromises for their religious believes” he added.
The two, who gained admission to the school, are yet to be enrolled following the school’s insistence that they cut their dreadlocks in conformity with the school’s rules.
