The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has said its Western regional office has reported sightings of dolphins washed ashore on some of the beaches and samples have also been taken for laboratory analysis.
To prevent the washed-ashore fish from entering into the food chain the FDA inspection teams have been dispatched to fish markets including the Osu Mandela market in the Korle-Klottey Municipal Assembly.
A statement issued and signed by Mrs. Rhoda E.Appiah, Head of Communication and Education at the FDA cautioned the public to be wary of both fresh and recently smoked fish which are being sold at unusually low prices.
“In this regard, the general public is cautioned to be guided by the freshness of the eyes and the redness of the gills of fish that seek to purchase. The washed-ashore fish typically show signs of popped out and unclear eyes, dull coloration gills bloating around the abdominal areas and /or possible cozing of foul scented fluids.”
The FDA has also intensified its public education and sensitization in the affected areas.
Tons of dead fish were found along the shores of the Osu Castle beach in Accra on Friday.
On that same day, close to 100 mammals suspected to be melon-headed whales were also washed ashore at the Axim-Bewire beach in the Nzema East Municipality of the Western Region.
The Director of the Centre for Coastal Management at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) Prof Dennis Worlanyo Aheto has stated that the death of sea fishes can be attributed to the climate change effect.
