Mr. Kwame Agyeman-Budu, the Managing Director (MD) of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), has refuted claims of incompetency against him by some workers and Senior Staff of the Company and said he took many decisions with his Deputy Managing Director Finance and Deputy Managing Director Human Resource.
Recounting his achievements to justify his competency level, Mr. Kwame Agyeman-Budu, said he initiated the one-day one-service for new meters for customers and the ECG was currently undergoing a new Wifi project, leveraging on the government to connect ECG’s offices (regions, districts, customer service centers, substations) with the fiber.
Mr. Agyeman-Budu said claims that he did not approve the provision of adequate materials for the Company’s operations was because there had been shortages due to the COVID-19 pandemic, adding; “Most companies from whom we buy these materials folded up and were not producing, hence the little stock left was exhausted.”
He said accusations that there were no accessories for vendors were unfounded because ECG did not buy accessories for vendors.
“What happens is that if you apply to be a vendor for ECG, you bring along your desktop machine to the ICT Directorate for the VPN to be installed onto it. A vendor buys a quota monthly and gets a percentage for selling power,” the MD said.
He said it was also not true that he stopped revenue mobilization in June 2020, and explained that the government-subsidized electricity for some months and instructed that no form of revenue or disconnection of power should be done, with other companies like VRA, Ghana Water, and GRiDco, also adhering to the rules.
The staff of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) recently demanded that Managing Director, Kwame Agyeman-Budu be relieved of his duty with immediate effect because the Power Company is on the verge of collapsing due to the lack of vision and mismanagement.
They made this known at their National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting Friday, 9th April 2021.
The workers further cited that breaches in procurement services in the awarding of contracts and outsourcing collection of revenue from SLT customers, to third parties at high commissions [even though that can be done by staff for free] as part of the reasons for their demand.
They accused the MD of lacking appreciation of his duties and roles adding that he is “grossly deficient” when it comes to matters relating to administrative and corporate governance while bypassing the structures to give instructions and most of the time threaten artisans, managers without due regard to their supervisors.
