An investigation has found that pervasive racism was behind a failure to properly commemorate black and Asian soldiers who died more than a century ago fighting for the former British Empire.
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission said over 100,000 First World War casualties – mostly from Africa and the Middle East – were not remembered by name in the same way as their white comrades.
Thousands of others were commemorated through collective memorials or simply in registers without a monument.
The commission said it was deeply sorry for the wrongs of the past and would act immediately to correct them.
