The First Lady, Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo, has reiterated the government’s promise to establish a hostel facility for porters, popularly known as Kayayei in the Greater Accra Region.
She noted that her husband’s administration is aware that things are really difficult for the porters and reaffirmed that the government is working hard to fulfill its promise to them.
Speaking at a health screening exercise organized in Accra by the Infant Malaria Prevention Foundation in collaboration with National Malaria Control Programme, Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo said “Nana Addo appreciates your efforts, and beyond abolishing your daily tax, he is strengthening the National Health Insurance and providing your siblings with free SHS. He will surely provide the hostels for you and make your lives better”.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP), led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo pledged during the 2016 elections to provide hostel facilities for Kayayei who sleep on the streets at the mercy of the weather.

The construction of the first 600-bed ‘Kayayei’ hostel is to provide accommodation and skills training to these vulnerable young women and save them from sleeping under perilous living conditions.
President Akufo-Addo earlier in 2019 directed the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP) to give ‘Kayayei’ in the country an amount of GH¢2 million.
