Taxi drivers in Koforidua in the Eastern Regional Capital have increased transport fares between 30pessewas to Ghc2 depending on the distance they travel.
30pessewas have been added to all town running taxi fares increasing it from Ghc2 to Ghc2.30p.
Passengers who commute to Okorase will now pay Ghc3 per trip.
However, 50pessewas was added to taxi fares of those who commute from town to Jumapo while Ghc1 slapped on fares to Asikesu
Ghc1 and 2 cedis were added to taxi fares to and from Adawso and Konkon respectively.
The Chairman of the Taxi Drivers Union George Boateng alias “Cooly Cooly” urged all passengers and taxi drivers to comply with the new directives.
“Now 30p has been added to all town running taxi fares but Ghc1 to long-distance fares. so it is now Ghc2. 30p.For Atekyem was ghc2.20pm it is now Ghc2.50p.Agavenya too we added 30p. Okorase is now GHC3.In some places, we added 40p and 50p. Taxi to Jumapo we added 50p. Asikesu fare increased by Ghc1. For Adawso and Konkon we added Ghc1 and Ghc2 respectively. So now Adawso will be Ghc6” He said.
Road Transport Operators in the country increased commercial transport fares by thirteen percent (13%).
This is the first increase in public transport fares this year.
The new prices are expected to take effect today Saturday, June 5. This means that passengers would have to pay 20 pesewas on every one cedi charge.
According to the operators, the increase is in line with the administrative arrangements on public transport fares.
In a statement, the operators noted “after long and difficult negotiations with stakeholders, a 13 percent upward adjustment in public transport fares across all category of services have been urged upon. This is to accommodate predominantly an increase in the price of fuel.”
