The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Mavis Hawa Koomson has whispered that the government has arranged to provide some livelihood packages meant to support the fisherfolk as they observe the closed season.
According to her, they will go around to regions including all fishing communities to give them the support that will enable them to take care of their family in this period of fishing vacation.
The Minister added that they will share fishing nets with all fisherfolk since they will not be allowed to use an unauthorized net to go fishing.
This came to light during a ceremony held to declare the closure season of the year.
The closed season which starts today, Thursday 1st to 31st July for canoe and inshore fishers and 1st July to August 31, 2021, for industrial trawlers was declared by Mavis Hawa Koomson at a ceremony held in Keta in the Volta region.
The representative closing ceremony was attended by the leadership of fisherfolk from the Western, Greater Accra, Central and Volta regions.
However, the leadership of fisherfolk vowed their support towards the initiative and then called on their coworkers to observe good fishing practices when the season finally opened.
