The Abuakwa North Municipal Assembly in the Eastern Region embarked on a bizarre fumigation exercise Thursday, July 29, 2021, at the main market whilst traders and shop owners were operating.
Apart from the health risk of inhaling the harmful chemicals, food items being sold to the public risked accumulating the chemical particles which may enter into the body of consumers.
The Assembly Member for Mangoase Electoral Area Citizen Kofi Agyemang expressed concern that “I have taken notice of a fumigation exercise going on this morning at the market and the shops around while the business is ongoing. Please be informed that I was not aware of such exercise and according to the Environmental Health officer I have contacted, the exercise was supposed to be done after a business hour and not this morning. I apologize for any inconvenience. Sorry”
The Abuakwa North Municipal Environmental Officer is however on record to have said, the fumigation was scheduled! to take place after brisk activities at the market have ended in the event therefore surprised with the sudden turn of event.
He promised to investigate.
