The head of the Ghana Medical Association’s COVID -19 team for the Greater Accra Region, Dr. Frank Owusu-Sekyere, has revealed that in the third wave of transmission in Ghana, the coronavirus is mostly contracted by children aged between 22 and 11 years.
“More of the COVID-19 cases are affecting children. That is not something we saw in the first and second waves. The third wave is visiting children a bit more and that is a bit worrying”. Dr. Owusu-Sekyere indicated how, the Delta variant is to be blamed for the new tendency in Accra, Ghana’s capital.
Three out of every five children admitted to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital died as a result of the illness, according to him and other medical authorities in his team.
“At least we’ve seen about five or six cases and unfortunately we’ve lost about three of them to COVID-19. Occasionally, you will see one, but unfortunately, we’re seeing a lot more,” he added.
However, Dr. Owusu-Sekyere commends the Greater Accra Minister for the enforcement of the security procedures, Henry Quartey, noting that it is the greatest approach to stop the transmission of the virus.
