Minister of Food and Agriculture, Owusu Afriyie Akoto, has sworn Mr. Peter Mac Manu into office as Ghana Cocoa Board chairman to take over from Mr. Hackman Owusu Agyemang, who has chaired the body since 2017.
According to the Ghana Cocoa Board Law 1984 (PNDCL 81), as amended, the Board of Directors is to be composed as follows:
Three Government nominees one of whom shall be the chairman
The Chief Executive
Two farmers’ representatives being persons with interest in cocoa farming
One member of the working staff
The Governor of the Bank of Ghana
A representative of the Minister responsible for Food and Agriculture, not below the rank of Director
A representative of the Minister responsible for Trade, not below the rank of Director
The board chairman Peter Mac Manu has pledged to build on measures put in place by the previous board, which had significantly contributed to the record production in the current season.
He said “We will work to consolidate the gains made, strengthen and accelerate the implementation of ongoing policies, projects, programs, and initiatives to achieve sustained improvement in yield to ensure sustainable incomes for our illustrious cocoa farmers,” he stated.
The board chairman said while the cocoa farmers are happier today because of improved incomes, there was much more needed to be done to bring farmer incomes to a level to encourage the youth to find cocoa farming attractive.
“Our duty as a board is to provide policy direction that will lead to the attainment of this objective, and this duty we will discharge to the best of our abilities,” Mr. Manu added.
