Bread bakers in the Northern region are expected to go on strike today August 24, 2021, over skyrocketing baking materials prices.
The bread Bakers say the strike will be followed by a peaceful demonstration on Wednesday, August 25.
According to them, there has been a total increase of 25% in the price of bread flour as well as sugar within the past 2 to 3 weeks.
They said yeast, butter, and other bread-making products have all increased.
This is affecting their operation and cost of production making them run at a loss.
A month ago, members of the Bread Bakers Association in the Ashanti Region announced an increment in the price of bread.
A loaf of bread sold at GHS5 was increased by Ghc1 hence sold at GHS6.
The decision according to the association is due to the rising cost of raw materials in the production of the staple.
