Professor Joseph Osafo, the Senior Psychologist at the University of Ghana, has told men to be mindful of how they treat their wives because marrying a woman doesn’t make her a man’s property.
According to him, most men in the country think that tieing the knot with a lady simply means who owns her and can control her anyhow.
He passed this comment during an interview with an Accra-based radio station.
”When you marry a woman, she’s not your property. There is a contract but she is not your property,” he advised men.
Giving his psychological perspective of the recent spate of murder incidents, especially involving married couples, Prof. Osafo stressed; ”That mindset that you have paid money to a wed woman is a slavery mentality. It gives the impression that when someone marries a woman, he has bought her.”
Some spouses prefer a lavish wedding whereas others prefer what some would describe as a low-budget wedding.
However, in both situations, men spend on their girlfriends to make them their wives.
But to Prof. Joseph Osafo, spending money on weddings, particularly men doing so, results in mental slavery.
He noted that whenever a male spouse spends on his partner, there is a possibility of him thinking he owns the woman and this mentality pushes him to take impulsive and regretful actions when something goes wrong in the marriage or relationship.
Prof. Osafo also advised women to be measured in their demands on their partners stressing “money is blood”.
