The President of the National House of Chiefs who doubles as Omanhene of Sefwi Ahwianso Traditional Area Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II has called on the Minister for Food and Agriculture to institute a compensation package for poultry farmers affected by bird flu outbreak especially those in Bibiani Anhwianso Bekwai Municipality.
He said the outbreak has had devastating consequences on the farmers who have made huge investments into the business.
He said the bird flu outbreak has killed over 29, 000 birds so far in the area.
He said this during a courtesy call at his palace by the Minister of Agriculture Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto to begin his working visit in the Western North region to access the situation on grounds as far as the outbreak in concern.
The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto gave assurance to poultry farmers associations in the Western North and the country at large that the government is working on their compensation requests.
He said, Ghana’s poultry industry has been hard hit by bird flu in the last two and half months in greater Accra, Volta region and later went to Central region and now has hit Western North.
Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto stressed that his ministry is doing everything possible to contain the spread of the virus.
He said the veterinary department of the Ministry has been resourced to fight the virus.
