The Eastern Regional Capital, Koforidua, has been engulfed with filth as tonnes of municipal waste generated have not been collected for treatment and disposal for about a week now.
A visit to parts of New Juaben South Municipality observed heaps of refuse left uncollected while solid Waste collection containers are full and being spilled over.
Residents were dumping indiscriminately around the waste containers littering the environment.
The degradable waste in the unsegregated heaps of waste is decomposing at a faster rate owing to the daily rainfalls.
Residents staying around these waste collection centers in particular are worried that the situation is a recipe for outbreaks of disease such as cholera and dysentery.
According to them, apart from the pungent stench emitting to nearby shops and homes, it is also attracting flies and rodents.
It is not clear what the waste containers are not being emptied and heaps of garbage not collected by Zoomlion Company responsible for the management of waste in the Municipality.
