Many perceive that salvation is by sweat and all who do not sweat it out on our terms are undeserving of it. Many also falsely think that once we choose to be God’s children we need to be “good” to be counted worthy and deserving of His continual love and mercy.
Yet, in the book of Jonah, God dismantles this false religion. He shatters the “we are worthy because we are the very good children of God, and they are unworthy because they are very baaaad” myth. He reveals our ignorance of His great love for all mankind, rebukes our warped sense of judgement, and throws the spotlight on our own unworthiness.
How dare God to save Ninevah, wicked Ninevah, is what you say everytime you minimise the power of the blood to clean the foulest sinner and deny God the prerogative to pardon the sinner on His terms alone.
Read the book of Jonah, especially the last Chapter and chill if you are the “faithful” son who stayed home; and if you are the prodigal son who has wondered far from home, may it give you great hope to come back.
Have a restful Saturday. Shabbat Shalom.
