Heaven Dew Montessori in Koforidua, the Eastern Regional capital is implementing community helpers’ academic program to instill community-mindedness in their school kids.
The ultimate objectives, according to the Head of the School, Mrs. Charlotte Owusu is to give the children a sense of belonging, patriotism, responsibility, and social concern, and whip up their desire to be problem solvers in their communities to help fix the country.
As part of activities to engender these objectives, the institution has held a “Career Day” for the school children to role-play various community helpers in society including nurses, doctors, Firefighters, Police, Military, Pastors, farmers, volunteers, Engineers, janitors among others.
“At the beginning of the term our theme was community helpers, so teachers walked children through who community helpers are, we want the children to be community-minded and be problem solvers”.
She added “we tell them that community help is not only about white color jobs but jobs like farming, carpentry cooking, baking are all professions. We are multi-talented so Children shouldn’t be biased. You can be more than two things at the same time. So the whole of this term is dedicated to developing careers to make the Children aware that there is something call career they have to choose”
Research has established that teaching and exposing children to community helpers and their roles in society help to promote respect and confidence, collaboration, inspires interest of kids in possible career choices and encourage the interest of children in their community by assuming responsibility to be law-abiding, create a clean and safe environment and challenge children find solutions to local problems.
The Chairman of Parents Teachers Association at Heaven Dew Montessori Yusif Osman called on parents to pay greater attention to imbibing a sense of patriotism, discipline, and volunteerism in their children to enable them to grow up become responsible and problem-solving adults who will not throw their hands in despair in future but commit to community development.
