A 27-year-old Mobile Banker with the Kwaebibirim Rural Bank in Boadua branch, Gideon Osei Bonsu has been slapped with 35 stealing charges and sentenced to nine years and two months in hard labor by the Asamankese Circuit Court.
Gideon Osei Bonsu, the accused, according to the prosecution statement was employed on 18/9/2018 as a Mobile banker and he was assigned to advertise for more customers to the existing ones.
He was also mandated to collect daily cash from customers and deposit the same in the T-24 account system. On 28/06/2021, a customer went to the bank with a request to withdraw an amount of ¢10,000 from her account and so, her request proved futile because the teller told her that she did not have such an amount in her account.
At that point, the accused person who was directly responsible for the collection of cash deposits from the customer and others was summoned by management of the Bank to explain why monies in the said customer account had dwindled but he couldn’t give any tangible answer.
The Authority of the Bank however made a complaint at their headquarters for forensic auditing of various accounts of customers as well as records of the accused.
On 29/06/2021, the Bank’s internal auditor concluded his job and revealed that the accused person has embezzled an amount of Gh61,840.00 which was deposited into the accounts of 31 customers.
A report was made to the police and the accused was arrested and during interrogation, the accused person admitted the offenses and started refunding an amount of GH¢19,760.92 but he was in Police custody that period.
After investigation, the accused was charged with the offenses and arraigned before court for prosecution.
