Prostitution as the oldest profession as perceived seems to be gaining roots in Koforidua, the Eastern Regional capital for some years now.
Practitioners, who are mainly young ladies, have adopted the lifestyle of prostitution attributing it to a lack of proper parental care and non-availability of employment.
A 15-year old Junior High School pupil at Nsukwao (name withheld), in an exclusive interview with the reporter, revealed that she has been in the act for the past four years as her parents have refused to fend for her as expected of them.
She indicated that she has experienced lots of diverse incidents in the course of her practice, with some ugly situations but has no other choice.
Even though she is still in school, she stated that she does her usual practice immediately after school hours, where her clients usually invite her to their destinations on phone.
“I have contacts of all the men I sleep with so it is just a matter of phone call, and I’m gone. I know those that I can trust so I deal with them but for those, I had a bad experience with in the past, I don’t give them the chance at all”.
“My parents are not taking good care of me so I have to find means of getting what I want. That is, what I eat, wear and even with expenses in school by myself” she emphasized.
Meanwhile, some young women who also spoke to the reporter argued that job opportunities in Koforidua are a challenge hence their decision to engage in prostitution as an alternative.
“There is no work in Koforidua here so what do we do then? Instead of sitting down hungry or going to steal from someone, we will rather use what we have to get what we want. At least we can get GHC50 to survive on a bad day” some ladies lamented.
Areas known to be the standpoint of prostitutes are Total 2, B-Foster traffic, Bula Spot as well as many other drinking spots.
