The West Akim Municipal Assembly in the Eastern region has handed over a 3-unit classroom block to the Onyinafunso community.
The edifice which comprises a library, office, store, a 6-unit KVIP toilet facility, and a 2-unit urinal block was funded through the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) and the Responsive Factor Grant (RFG) at an estimated cost of GHC502,000.
Handing over the edifice to Onyinafunso M/A Primary School to replace the dilapidated old building, the Hon. Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Seth Oduro Boadu, said education is one of the priority areas of the government to economically empower the citizenry especially those in deprived areas hence they strive to achieve equity in the distribution of educational resources.
At the short ceremony, the MCE charged the community and school authorities to own the facility and preserve it through routine maintenance for sustainable use.
MCE hinted that the Member of Parliament, Seth Acheampong was lobbying to extend electricity to the community.
The Municipal Director of Education, Mrs. Eunice Amfo-Akonnor expressed gratitude to the municipal assembly for the gesture.
She however requested that the construction of the additional three-unit classroom block be factored into the next fiscal budget of the assembly to make the school complete to serve the area.
The Municipal Engineer Matthias Eduah, in his welcome address, said that the facility was supposed to be constructed within 6 months but was completed within 3 months due to the urgency the assembly attached to the plight of the pupils and teachers.
He commended the contractor Sterling FB Construction Limited for the value for money work done.
The school building of Onyinafunso M/A Basic School constructed in 1962 by the Community deteriorated to the Verge of Collapse.
The situation forced parents to withdraw their children from the school on safety grounds leaving just a skeleton of students.
The plight of the school was highlighted by Journalist Obed Kojo Ansah and went viral on social media.
