The Eastern Regional Chairman of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Mr. Mawutor Semefah has said the reviewed of the 1992 Constitution is long overdue to enhance the country’s democratic process as the Constitution is almost 30 years old.
The 1992 Constitution came into force on January 7, 1993, after it had been approved in a referendum on April 28, 1992, but Mawutor Semefah said portions of the Constitution need urgent amendment and called on Ghanaians to join the campaigners advocating for the amendment.
In an interview, Mr. Mawutor Semefah said apart from being the longest-lasting constitution, it has witnessed a smooth transition from one party to the other but the two main political parties, National Democratic Congress and the New Patriotic Party which have governed the Nation since 1992 have failed Ghanaians and turned the Country down.
According to him, these two parties have adopted a ‘winner-takes-all’ policy in the governance system of the country and that has negatively affected the Country`s progress in the fourth republic.
Mr. Mawutor Semefah called on the Nana Akufo-Addo led administration to include opposition party members who are expected in the Economy in decision making and urged Chief Executives in the Assemblies to invite Constituency Executives in opposition to the Townhall meetings and other decision making meetings.
He condemned the recent brawl that broke out in the Ghanaian parliament following a dispute over a proposed tax on electronic transactions and urged the Legislature to avert such issues in 2022 and work for the interest of the voters.
