President Nana Akufo-Addo led New Patriotic Party, NPP, government in this year’s budget canceled the collection of tollbooth tolls with the hope of introducing a new tax dubbed “Electronic Levy”(E-levy) to get more revenue to transform the economy.
The government proposed a 1.75% tax on every electronic transaction including Mobile money and online banking but the majority of Ghanaians have rejected this new E-levy with the Minority in Parliament vehemently taking a staunch position to that effect resulting in the NDC leading the “Ye Ntua” demo recently.
Nonetheless, a cross-section of Ghanaians seem to be satisfied with the proposed E-levy and are ready to pay should the government go ahead and implement it while others are of the view that, even though it is a good initiative to widen the tax net, they are of the view the 1.75% is higher and should be reviewed downward.
Given this seemingly unending debate, Mr. Kwabena Frimpong Boateng, Bono East-based Social Commentator has suggested to Government to seek the opinion of all Ghanaians through a referendum.
Mr. Kwabena Frimpong Boateng stated that the behavior of our current Parliamentarians due to its political composition cannot be trusted with an issue like this and therefore a referendum which will involve the view of every citizen of voting age will be the best way to determine whether Ghanaians are ready for the introduction of E-levy or it should be aborted.
