A student at Akropong School for the Blind in Eastern Region is breaking the glass ceiling to reach one of his dreams as a professional Disc Jockey (DJ).
Sixteen-year-old Michael Doku alias Dj Unique though wishes to become a computer software engineer, playing music as DJ to entertain people is a passion he is pursuing aggressively despite being blind.
DJ Unique was the main DJ for the Inter-house sports competition held on Thursday and Friday in Akropong School for the Blind.
It was a delight to watch his dexterity with the virtual DJ software and lovely to listen to his music selections and mixes.
“I was inspired by some of my seniors here in this school; apart from that I listen to some top-notch DJs on radio stations in Ghana such as Dj Vyrusky, Dj Bedash, Dj Wobete. Even though my dream is to become a software developer, I love music, sometimes I sing too so I told myself why don’t I add the DJing so my family bought a laptop for me I was very young then. So I had the software installed that is Virtual Dj, Serato, V Dj Box which I used to learn. I used home free very well sometimes we do a virtual DJ home free competition with a friend called Moses who is here. So through that, I became perfect”
Dj Unique, a JHS 3 blind student said, he wants to be mentored to become a professional Dj to join the likes of his admirers such as Dj Vyrusky and DJ Wobete.
“I want to be mentored by DJ Vyrusky, DJ Wobete, and the rest to become a professional Dj”
Godwin Nana Wiafe, who is also a DJ and a former student of Akropong School for the blind appealed for the support of philanthropists to help set up a media studio in the school to help develop talents in the entertainment industry.
“They have to establish a media department in the school here .there are many other students who are also DJs. We have those who are good newscasters which is natural talent so if we have a media studio or any media house to partner with the school all those people will be trained to develop their talents. I hope it will help. I believe if we do this after school we will get jobs. Now even the sighted are not getting employment how much more we the blind but if our talents are developed self-employment will be guaranteed”
DJ Unique is not the only Blind student with a unique talent. Beatrice Adika, a female blind student with a showbiz name gargantuan lady is seriously gifted with Akan News casting prowess.
Her oratory command of the Akan language and adroit presentation skills forecast a brighter future if provided professional training and guidance.
