Whenever I visit my mum she serves me her nice fufu with bushmeat in the evening and Koko with animal milk in the morning but I tell her I am vegan, she sits at a particular corner on her balcony dejected, surprised and shocked that her own son has lost his way and veered off so far.
Sometimes, I feel she broadcasts disappointing signals to my senior brother in the tone of “is he alright?” Sometimes, my senior Bro joins in the judgement and says “God has given man the permission to eat animals “
How do I tell the “flat-earthiest” that the earth is round without asking her to go to the moon or to try and walk to the edge?
People become vegan/vegetarian for diverse reasons. Health, lifestyle and spirituality are my reasons for deciding to eat only plant-based diets. About 12 years ago, I started feeling sad whenever I eat eggs, milk or meat. I instantly became guilty and would apologize to the meat whiles I enjoyed its flesh. Later, I would ask myself every time I eat eggs if someone took my children from us and cooked them, would I be happy? These thoughts dominated my mind until one day I decided to stop contributing to the abuse and murder of innocent animals.
Spiritually
My compassion came alive as I became more empathetic toward others. Knowing became eminent and I instantly became a part of everything.
Healthwise,
My bad cholesterol (LDL) lowered from 4.6 to 1.6 in 6 months. Consequently, my high blood pressure stabilized without medication and my angina pains vanished totally.
Lifestyle
My wife says I have become a much happier husband, gentle dad and a more pleasurable experience in the relationship. I feel lighter, lift heavier weights and run longer.
My question is, I gained all this from taking carcasses out of my food, why is society promoting the consumption of dead animals?
Is it ignorance, business, traditions, culture, popular religion or lifestyle?
Have you asked yourself why you eat meat?
Is it for protein? If yes, would you spare the poor souls if I told you that beans and peanuts will give you about 22 per cent protein without the saturated fat? If you knew that the cardiovascular complications that saturated fat and free radicals cause are combatted with fibre which is abundant in plant protein would you be vegan?
Do you know that life stock farming alone contributes about 18 per cent to carbon emissions in climate degradation and forest loss?
Pls, don’t throw the argument that plants are also alive at my possible vegan converts, because we all know plants do not have a nervous system and pain receptors.
Pls, don’t fight my campaign with the difficulty in finding iron, omega 3 oils, vitamin b12 and d in plant foods, because hemp seeds, chia seeds, some seaweed, almonds, sunlight and supplements can provide very healthy alternatives.
Pls, don’t quote Romans 14 and say God has allowed meat killing and consumption, because according to Genesis 1; 29, God’s original plan for man’s diet was vegan. God gave animals pain receptors and asked us to kill them?
Pls, don’t say lions, dogs and cats eat deers and sheep, because human consciousness is higher than animal programming. Humans are to do better not follow blindly.
Compassion and respect for all life forms increase consciousness, and inclusion and save our environment so can we relook at our diet?
