A Human Rights Advocacy group, Citizens for Truth and Accountability, Ghana (CITAG) are demanding justice and accountability from the Ghana Police Service for the late Albert Donkor who allegedly died in police custody.
The group has asked the Inspector General of Police to investigate and carefully examine the murder of
the 28-year-old in Nkoranza.
The Ghana Police Service in its press statement indicated that the slain Albert Donkor was an armed robber who died in an exchange of gunfire during their anti-robbery intelligence operations.
However, the family has refuted the claims, saying he was picked up from home by unknown police personnel and subsequently died in their custody where he died.
But reacting to the account by the police, the Convener of the group, Clement Clinton Blay said the police gave a sceptical account and have called the bluff of the police, describing it as unsubstantiated and purely fabricated.
Citizens for Truth And Accountability, Ghana is seriously questioning the Police’s justification for arresting the deceased at his residence without adequate evidence and later leading to his demise.
The group praised the Nkoranza youth for the unrest in desire of justice for their colleague, even though they condemn the attacks on the Police station but the group believes that their anger erupted from heightened frustration.
Mr Clement Clinton Blay told the press on Saturday, 21st May 2022 that the brutal act by the police is rife of injustice, the people of Nkoranza cannot stay aloof when innocent Albert Donkor has been targeted and murdered.
Mr Blay said the most worrying trend is that murder cases involving police officers indiscriminately shooting down civilians haphazardly are becoming part of their service.
