The Ghana Education Service (GES) has directed Heads of Basic and Secondary Schools in the country to mobilize their management to institute measures to control and safeguard students in their schools as teachers commence nationwide strike action.
According to GES, it has summoned the leadership of the aggrieved parties to a meeting for a solution but whilst at it, the management of GES has directed the Regional and District Directors to ensure that basic schools remain open till further directive.
Pre-Tertiary teacher unions in Ghana on Monday, July 4, 2022, declared an indefinite strike action with immediate effect following the failure of the government to pay the cost of living allowance (COLA) they asked for.
The unions are the Ghana National Association of Teachers, the National Association of Graduate Teachers, the Coalition of Concerned Teachers Ghana, and the Teachers and Educational Workers Union.
Meanwhile, the Labour Commission of Ghana has directed the aggrieved unions and government through the ministry and agencies concerned to begin negotiation.
This implies that the strike must be suspended whenever negotiation begins however the unions will not heed.
Likely, the Labor Commission of Ghana as its modus operandi in recent times will go to court to seek an injunction on the strike and compel the unions to suspend their strike action whenever negotiation begins.
