The Deputy Minister for Fishing and Aquaculture and a Member of Parliament for Ekumfi constituency Hon Francis Ato Cudjoe has outlined some challenges they are encountering in the fishing sector.
According to him, many fishermen used light in the sea to fish which is a very bad attitude from the fishermen.
In an interview with Abena Pokua Awenee, ‘’Efa wo ho’’ morning show on Accra base radio station Dadi FM, Hon Cudjoe averred that some of the fishermen lack knowledge on fishing.
Some also use [DDT] to kill all the fishes which have automatically reduced the number of the fishes in our sea
Hon Codjoe Outline that the fishermen need to be educated on how to fish to sustain resources at the right time to fish in order to achieve their goals.
He said fish is one of the natural resources that serve as foods, nutrients, livelihoods and as well as the promotion of economic growth in the country.
Moreover, he added that fish is a resource which is overexploited; this means that our input in fishing activities is more than what has been expected
Looking at the coastal areas there are about 15000 plus canoes and 26000 lakes which the lakes are many in numbers than the canoes, hence the fishing activities sometimes becomes difficult due to the insufficient of the canoes.
He averred that the most throbbing part of fishing is when purchasing expensive tools and at the end of the day you may not benefit anything from it.
He then entreated the fishermen to be well educated on fishing so that they will increase their ability to fishing.
