Nigeria High Commissioner His Excellency Ibas Ibok-Ete Ekwe, accompanied by Unah Joseph, Consular Officer, Ululere Sevanus Joseph, protocol officer, and Adimabua John were in Koforidua Thursday, July 28, 2022, to meet stakeholders on matters of sex trafficking and other issues
The entourage met the Eastern Regional Minister Seth Kwame Acheampong, heads of the security agencies including the Ghana Immigration Service.
The entourage also visited Daasebre Kwaku Boateng II, New Juaben Omanhene.
Media investigation in Koforidua has revealed the trafficking of young Nigerian women to Bula Spot and Little Ben brothels for sexual exploitation through a conspiracy of Nigerian and Ghanaian syndicates.
After the investigation, the High Commissioner sent a delegation to Koforidua to confirm the report.
The Office of the Eastern Regional Minister wrote that the purpose of His Excellency Ibas Ibok-Ete Ekwe, the Nigerian High Commissioner to Ghana was to interact with the regional minister, the Nigerian community in the region, and some other key stakeholders, aimed at deepening the relationship between the two countries.
That is the opening statement, Mr. Seth Acheampong expressed his happiness about the visit and underscored the need to maintain the good relationship that the two nations have enjoyed over the years, adding that, given the geographical location of Ghana, surrounded by Francophone countries, Nigeria as the closest English speaking country plays a key role in the developmental need of Ghana.
He urged the Nigerian community in the region to continue to dialogue with the Security institutions and leadership in the region to get their challenges resolved.
Hon. Acheampong indicated that the region was peaceful and encouraged the Nigerian community to live within the laws of the country.
On his part, H. E. Ibas Ibok-Ete thanked the minister for the warm reception accorded him and his entourage since his arrival to the region.
He opined that, for ECOWAS to achieve economic integration, the people within the sub-region have to be integrated first.
The two leaders discussed security issues, a threat to security, and the need to confront these challenges. Among the security issues discussed were trafficking including child trafficking and girls trafficking, cybercrime, and the threat of terrorism.
At the Regional Security Council meeting (REGSEC), H. E. Ibas and the Nigerian community in the region were allowed to interact with the Security Chiefs where some of their concerns were addressed.
