Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, the minister for Agriculture has make it clear that food shortage at the various Senior High Schools across the country is not due to lack of foodstuffs for distribution.
Explaining the situation on TV3 New Day Show with Johnie Hughes, the minister revealed that the shortage was as a result of lack of funds to pay suppliers of accumulated debts by the Government.
He stated that Ghana currently has enough food to supply both schools and for public consumption due to the many interventions by the Akufo-Addo led government.
Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto mentioned the planting for food and jobs policy as a major contributor to success of Ghana’s food production over the past years.
“My brother, with regards to the SHS issue it was not shortage of foodstuffs but it was about money. The suppliers were not ready to lease out foodstuffs because they were requesting for monies owed them before supplying new ones” the minister stressed.
With regards to encouraging more people especially the youth into the agriculture sector, the minister indicated that many youth are now into farming with some professional workers even switching careers to get into farming.
