Former Minister for Youth and Sports Hon. Elvis Afriyie Ankrah has said it was all lies and found claims ridiculous when some journalists in the country reported that he bought a coconut for $100 during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
“There was no issue about coconut, I drank the normal coconut. Coconut is less than $1.” Hon Elvis Afriyie Ankrah told Sompa FM in an interview.
According to the former minister, at the time of the tournament, a piece of coconut was sold at even $1 wondering how journalists came by the $100 unit price of coconut.
Mr Afriyie Ankrah also revealed that such fake stories were made about him simply because some people thought he was becoming so much popular hence the decision to bring him down.
He alleged that some journalists were bribed with cars and others just to tarnish his name.
“There was no issue about coconut, I drank the normal coconut. Other officials and I were sitting down drinking coconut, the next morning I saw it on the front page of one newspaper that we have gone to buy coconut, some were quoting $200.It was absolutely rubbish.” He revealed.
Coconut is less than $1. It was after the tournament I realized some journalists were contracted to tarnish my image. They bought them cars…one of them was given money six times to go after me. Later the person came to apologize to me.” He revealed.
