Covid-19 personalized vehicles spotted in Koforidua over the weekend are raising concerns of appropriateness or otherwise.
A quick search indicated that the United Kingdom in April 2021 banned all personalized number plates which resemble “COVID” stating that it could be deemed offensive!
UK’s DVLA moved to ban personalized number plates that could be considered to refer to COVID-19. There are fears that the plates could cause offense or distress to people who have lost friends or family members to the disease.
The UK government agency decided to block the creation and sale of registration numbers such as ‘COV 1D’, ‘COV 11D’, and ‘COV 111D’ over concerns they are in poor taste and might cause offense or embarrassment, particularly to those who have lost loved ones during the pandemic. A similar move was made in South Australia last year after a BMW prompted outrage when it was seen at Adelaide Airport displaying the number plate ‘COVID19’.
Australia has taken a similar decision.
However, the government of Ghana seems to be rather registering state vehicles customized with “Covid-19” rated number plates.
A Facebook post on the timeline of Ansah Kojo Ansah, a journalist on one of such vehicles has rather attracted contempt by some individuals affiliated with the ruling government justifying the personalized COVID-19 plated vehicles being used by the state.
