Tension is simmering from a renewed feud between farmers and nomadic herdsmen in Fanteakwa North District in the Eastern region.
Many Farmers have accused the herdsmen of destroying their farms with their cattle threatening to take the laws into their hands to brutally attack the cattle and their herders.
The farmers say the cattle have been grazing and jolting in their farms destroying the crops into which they have made investments into.
Abass Fuseini Sbaabe, a former District Chief Executive for the area under Mahama led NDC government lamented that “about 70 per cent of alien Fulani Cattle herders in Fanteakwa District are based in the forest reserves and move from these reserves to destroy crops and run back into the reserves. The Forestry Commission is quick to arrest chainsaw operators and galamseyers who encroach on the forest reserves but not Fulani Cattle herders whose animals graze on young plants in the reserves.
How come the Commission has become impotent in dealing with these alien Fulanis”
He added “So how can we protect our investments in the face of these destructive cattle? Are we free to take up arms and defend our farms because the government and its agents have failed to protect our interests?”
Fanteakwa North District is known for clashes between farmers and herdsmen over the years.
Previous incidents led to the killing of many cattle and the arrest of some farmers.
