Mr. Godfred Dame, the Attorney General has commended former President John Dramani Mahama for his contribution to the debate on the need for constitutional reform.
He said his views on the need to amend article 71 on the payment of emoluments to certain office holders are of interest to him.
Speaking at Ho during the Ghana Bar Association conference, Mr. Dame said never mind the fact that he (John Dramani Mahama) has been enjoying those same facilities and privileges for over 20 years and continues to enjoy them.
“Mr. President, it has taken decades, arguably over a century, to build the integrity of Ghana’s Judiciary. Let us not condone the imprudent actions of citizens to destroy it through baseless attacks.”
Former President John Dramani Mahama wants to review the ex gratia and other benefits of Article 71 office holders.
He said if he gets the nod to return as president, he will continue the review process of the 1992 Constitution started under late president Mills.
His comments follow the renewed debate about ex gratia payments after Togbe Afede returned over GH¢360,000 paid to him as a parting gift for service as a Council of State member.
