The Agric Department of the New Juaben North municipality of the Eastern region distributed 20 piglets to some selected farmers on Tuesday, 20th September 2022 at Effiduase.
The project which is under the Rearing for Food and Jobs program is aimed at assisting farmers within the municipality in order to empower their livelihood.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Madam Comfort Asante in an interview with the media emphasised that the initiative which was started last year is aimed at supporting many people to enter into entrepreneurship to help deal with unemployment issues in the country.
She urged beneficiaries to take good care of the piglets and ensure they are well taken care of in order to guarantee their continuous life span.
Meanwhile, the Municipal Agric Director, William Asiedu Akrofi explained that the distribution was made possible after beneficiaries from last year presented some piglets to the Department out of what the soar delivered.
He called on the general public to take advantage of the initiative and get registered to have access to the numerous benefits of it in improving their living standards.
Dr Juliana Kyerewaa Adu, the Municipal Veterinary Officer on her part took beneficiaries through basic education on how to keep the animals safe to get the expected returns.
She advised beneficiaries to be health conscious as far as the environment and the safety of the piglets are concerned and also urged them to feed the animals with the requisite diets as recommended.
In applying chemicals and medications to animals, Madam Kyerewaa Adu warned farmers to desist from self-medications as their effects can root out all the animals without any mercy.
In all, all four beneficiaries received a total of six of the two-month-old piglets as the Department presented twenty piglets in all.
Beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the MCE and the Agric Department for the initiative and pledged to take good care of the animals and ensure it produces enough piglets for others to benefit from the initiative.
