As part of activities to improve the quality of education in the Abuakwa north municipality, the Municipal Education Directorate has organised science and mathematics quiz competitions for all the Junior High schools (JHS) within the Municipality.
The Science and maths quiz seeks to promote the study of science and mathematics in basic schools across the area.
The program was sponsored by Abuakwa North Member Of Parliament, Hon. Gifty Twum Ampofo is also the Deputy Minister of Education in charge of TVET.
The event brought together pupils and teachers of participating schools and was attended by the District Chief Executive, Hon. Alhaji Umar Babs Bodinga as well as Municipal Director of Education, Madam Abena Gyamera, Alhaji Opass the Constituency Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and some other constituency executives of the ruling NPP.
Four schools represented for the finals, namely; New Tafo Presby Jhs, Feeden Jhs, Saviour B Jhs and CRIG Jhs with the venue being the New Tafo Presby hall.
At the end of the contest, New Tafo CRIG JHS won with 52 points followed by the Saviour B JHS with 28 points and New Tafo Presby with 24 points with Feeden JHS scoring 19 points respectively.
Hon. Gifty Twum Ampofo presented a digital piano, text and exercise books, projectors, all-in-one computers, printers and other stationery to the schools that participated in the competition.
Speaking to the media, Hon. Gifty Twum-Ampofo indicated that Government is committed to improving quality education and that, the contest would encourage learning of science and mathematics in schools.
“STEM is all about TVET so I encourage pupils to put more effort into science to gain a foothold in their future academic endeavour.
“I have the confidence that this exercise would generate positive competition among schools in the municipality and ultimately lead to the improvement in their academic performance” the MP emphasised.
The Municipal Director of Education, Madam Abena Gyamera said, “the Science and mathematics quiz is not a subject to be afraid of per my observation as candidates work heatedly leading to a tough health competition. There is an intervention for the girls to power them to learn seriously, we are also preparing them for the Regional competition and with the hope, we shall definitely get to National.
Meanwhile, the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Alhaji Umar Bodinga speaking to the media commended the organisers of the event for a wonderful show and also advised students to take science and mathematics seriously from a basic level to make it easier for them to pursue the subjects and other fields of studies.
He appealed to all stakeholders, NGOs and other bodies to contribute to turning around the quality of education in the municipality.
Alhaji Bodinga then promised to provide any candidate that gets aggregate 9 with provisions and chop box with his own pocket money to proceed to Senior High School.
CRIG JHS which was crowned the winner of the quiz won last year’s edition as well.
