Former Attorney General, Betty Mould-Iddrisu, has said that the 1992 Constitution provides the President-led Executive branch of government far too much power.
She feels that since this undermines checks and balances, it has to be examined.
Madam Mould-Iddrisu continued by calling this a regrettable circumstance.
“In order for democracy to be sustainable, you need to have the checks and balances. Our Constitution, unfortunately, lays too much power in the executive,” she said on the Sunrise show on 3FM Monday, October 3.
She added “We are to pay some more attention to this constitution. The #AriseGhana seeking to have the constitution reviewed is a step in the right direction. They are right.”
Some members of Ghanaian society have called for the Constitution to be amended.
For instance, according to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the 1992 Constitution should be modified if necessary to accommodate the demands of the present and the future.
